Salary: $6,650 – $8,601 per month, DOE

Overtime Eligible

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position performs the duties of Public Works Maintenance Worker under the general supervision of the Public Works Senior Lead Technician or division Lead Technician. This position is primarily responsible to perform maintenance and repairs of the City’s streets, public rights-of-way and storm drainage systems. Performs skilled manual labor tasks and operates equipment, machinery and power tools to fulfill duties as assigned. May be called to respond to emergency situations and will assist with duties of other divisions within the Public Works Department as needed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include but are not limited to the following:

  • Ability to safely operate assigned equipment including backhoes, street sweepers, vactor equipment, dump trucks, road shoulder mowers, ice & snow control equipment and other related equipment.
  • Perform vegetation control in public rights-of-way.
  • Perform skilled manual labor.
  • Ability to use simple power tools safely and effectively to fulfill duties as assigned.
  • Ability to present a positive, friendly image to the public using tact, courtesy, and good judgment.
  • Ability to follow instructions and to perform duties independently.
  • Ability to use a computer and related software applications as required by the job.
  • Ability to perform the essential physical requirements of the job.
  • Ability and willingness to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
  • Requires regular and reliable attendance.
  • Works collaboratively as a part of the Public Works team.
  • Exhibits a strong commitment to internal and external customer service.
  • Performs tasks in compliance of all federal, state and city guidelines to ensure safe working conditions.
  • Interacts in a professional and respectful manner with city staff, elected officials, vendors, contractors and the public.
  • Assumes other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.
  • Two (2) to three (3) years minimum experience in street, utilities maintenance, or construction performing skilled manual labor, and the use and operation of equipment such as backhoes, dump trucks, streets sweepers, mowers, and power tools.

Ability to:

  • Communicate, read, write, and understand English at a level necessary for efficient job performance.
  • Maintain an updated knowledge of methods, techniques and materials for the construction, maintenance and repair of street and storm drainage systems.
  • Make routine mathematical computations and tabulations accurately and with reasonable speed.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public.
  • Deal with the public and general contractors and suppliers courteously and tactfully.
  • Use a personal computer and ability to learn job-related software applications.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid State of Washington Driver’s License with a good driving record.
  • Valid First Aid card or the ability to acquire within one year of appointment.
  • Possession of a valid State of Washington Class “B” CDL at the time of appointment, or the ability to acquire such license within one year.
  • Traffic control card strongly desired.
  • Chemical applicators certification of vegetation control in city rights-of-way preferred.

SUPERVISION:

Work is performed under the supervision of the Senior Lead Technician or a Lead Technician.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

  • Backhoes, street sweepers, vactor equipment, dump trucks, road shoulder mowers and other mowing equipment, ice & snow control equipment, and simple power tools.
  • Work involves the use of a calculator, personal computer and associated software, copiers, printers, and other general office or field equipment.

AUXILIARY DUTIES:

An employee in this classification is expected to routinely perform other duties as assigned that would typically be performed by an employee in a position within this classification or lower. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work is occasionally performed in an office environment while sitting at a desk or computer terminal for periods of time, or while standing for periods of time. Work involves moderate risk conditions, such as high-level noise, moving vehicles or machines, toxic materials and toxic odors. Work outside in all weather extremes; may be exposed to water, mud, dust, smoke, asbestos cement pipe, noxious odors, fumes, or chemicals, and/or traffic. Work requires physical exertion, such as long periods of standing, walking over rough, uneven surfaces, wading in water, and recurring bending, crouching, reaching and lifting of moderately heavy items. Continuous use of both hands in reaching/handling/grasping/fingering while performing duties. Occasional heavy work includes lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds and operating heavy vehicles, equipment and machinery. Occasionally ascends/descends stairs, ladders, and inclines while maintaining balance. Physical strength and ability must be sufficient to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods. Frequent bending/twisting at knees/waist/neck while performing mechanical repairs, maintenance items and other duties as assigned. Occasional kneeling/crouching/crawling while making repairs in confined spaces and awkward positions. May work at heights, in confined areas, alone, with others, or in noisy work area. May require constant moving, sitting or standing for excessive periods of time. Continuous use of all senses including feeling/talking/hearing/seeing while performing duties and while communicating with co-workers, public and completing all tasks as assigned. Must be able to distinguish color and maintain long-term and short-term memory. Will be required to wear safety protective gear when necessary.
