Summary:

The Seasonal Maintenance Worker is responsible for performing tasks related to the maintenance of City Assets. This role performs a variety of semi-skilled maintenance work and uses a variety of tools and equipment to maintain City parks, lawns, and public spaces, and assists with basic maintenance of streets, water, sewer, and storm drainage systems.

This position is considered nonexempt under the federal and state wage and hour laws and is eligible for overtime pay.  The work schedule will be assigned by management, according to the needs of the organization.

Reports to: City Manager or Designee

Location: On-site in Maintenance Shop and outdoors in the field, Carnation, Washington

FLSA Status: Nonexempt

Employment Type: Seasonal (up to 4 months, 40 hours a week from May or June through August or September)

Compensation: $25.00 an hour

Bargaining Unit: Non-represented

Benefits: Employees in this position are eligible for paid sick leave in accordance with Washington State law. This is a seasonal, temporary position and is not eligible for additional benefits.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Maintenance Work:

  • Inspect and repair city assets, as needed. Ensure the proper operation of city systems.
  • Maintain city parks through activities such as mowing, gardening, watering plants, maintaining garden beds, and weed eating. Operate necessary machinery such as mowers, leaf blowers, and weed eaters.
  • Perform routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refer defects or needed repairs to the supervisor. Clean and maintain equipment.
  • Operate a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment, including light and medium-sized construction, vehicles and power equipment.
  • Perform required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as assigned
  • Perform all duties in accordance with the City’s safety and security standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the City Manager or designee.

Qualifications:

  • Must have a valid Driver’s License.
  • Experience with motorized vehicles and equipment, including but not limited to, mowers, weed eaters, gardening tools, pumps, compressors, sanders, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, phone, ditch witch, and similar items preferred.

Skills:

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Comfortability working outdoors in varying weather conditions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and smell. The employee is also frequently required to operate vibrating equipment.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
